Highly Sensitive Personality Explained

Highly Sensitive Personality’s feel more deeply

Elaine Aron, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist author of The Highly Sensitive Person, first identified what she calls the "Highly Sensitive Personality" in an academic paper in the early '90s.

Sad puppyAccording to Aron, what all highly sensitive people share is an uncommon ability to notice subtleties that others might miss such as a fleeting look, a change in attitude, a message hidden message inserted in an apparently benign statement. "It's like they're wearing an extra pair of glasses," she says.

Highly Sensitive Personalities feel more deeply, and are more emotionally reactive. For highly sensitive people, they are more upset if they make a "bad" or "wrong" decision.

“That emotion is amplified because the emotional reactivity is higher," Aron states. Highly sensitive people are also highly conscientious people, Aron says. Because of this, they are more likely to be considerate and exhibit good manners.
